1st XV storm into final

A strong forward effort supported by some sparkling passing and running by the back line saw Sancta Maria College 1st XV overcome a powerful Mount Albert Grammar side 24-10 to reach the 1C final.

After withstanding early pressure a break away try down the right wing saw Sancta Maria take an early lead. Mount Albert fought back and their forward pack were rewarded with a try after being camped closed to the Sancta Maria line for several minutes.

The lead was restored for Sancta Maria with another scintillating back line move before the margin was reduced to just two points when Mount Albert Grammar crossed again just before half time.

Sancta Maria dominated the second half as the forward pack gained the upper hand with relentless tackling and superb team work. When the back line was released they continually caused problems for the Mount Albert defence and were rewarded with another try down the right hand side of the field.

Victory was secured a few minutes before the final whistle when after sustained pressure in the opposition half a clearing kick was charged down resulting in a fourth try to the 1st XV to round off an enterprising and conclusive 24-10 win.

Keeping a strong Mount Albert Grammar side scoreless in the second half will give the boys confidence when they line up in the final next weekend. A win built on a hard tackling, mobile and skillful pack and fast, adventurous back play delighted the good crowd who turned up to cheer on the team to victory.
