Counting down to opening night

We are now less than one week away before the curtains open for Sancta Maria College’s production “Grease” and the school population is buzzing with excitement, especially after a sneak peek of “Summer Nights,” one of the show’s musical numbers.” I think it’s safe to say that “Summer Nights” stuck in everyone’s heads for quite some time. So let’s have a closer look at two of the young actors who will take to the stage to perform for us.

First off we have our wonderfully gifted Gail Calicdan. With a passion for the arts ingrained in her, four years worth of drama classes under her belt and having a part in the 2015 and 2017 Stage Challenge, Gail takes on the role of ChaCha DiGregorio, “a flirtatious and overly-confident character who takes pride on being ‘the best dancer at St Bernadette’s,’ despite having the worst reputation.”

Gail reveals,“When they posted the cast list last year I was beyond nervous to go see it, as I was so unsatisfied with how my audition went. Seeing my name next to a lead role was such a surprise. I was nearly in tears, since prior to the announcement I was not expecting to get in as an ensemble member, let alone a lead role.”

As we get closer to the moment “Grease” hits the stage, she reflects, “It has been a blessing and a challenge to play ChaCha. Grease pretty much lives within the whole cast now, the singing, dancing and acting are all that we’ve been thinking about. After many demanding rehearsals and practices, we’re so eager to finally be able to perform in front of an audience. I know now that all the times I was dropped on my head doing ChaCha flips is going to be worth it. We can’t wait to bring this production to life and we really hope everyone will be impressed with it all!”

Andrew Salamoun, takes on the role of the ‘all-American rockstar student’ at Rydell High. He elaborates, “My character is an entertainer and very cunning. I I think that my character is the equivalent of a modern day rapper.”

Andrew further added, “This is my first ever production. I was nervous when auditioning but Mrs Oliver made me feel very comfortable. I wasn’t as experienced as the others so when it was announced I got a lead role, I was thrilled. I’ve really enjoyed the process of becoming Johnny Casino and after all this hard work, I hope this production will be amazing and everyone will enjoy themselves.”
