Drama and English students captivated by Orwell’s ‘1984’

Our Year 13 Drama and English classes were given a great opportunity to watch an adaptation of George Orwell’s “1984,” at the ASB Waterfront Theatre.

The play depicts the deep emotions of the main lead, Winston Smith, as he lives under the Ingsoc totalitarian political party. In a society where everyone’s actions, emotions and lives are controlled, Smith falls in love with Julia and both have great ambition to take down the party; however, to Julia and his despair, he is captured, brainwashed and tortured.

From the moment the lights dimmed, everyone was enthralled. The lights, sound effects, stage and performances from the talented cast was mind blowing and we stayed attentive and attracted to every scene.

The sounds, lights and props made everything so realistic and before you knew it the play had finished but the scenes still lingered in your mind; that’s how great it was. This adaptation of the novel is an absolute masterpiece and simply fantastic.

This play is highly recommended for theatre lovers, dystopian novel lovers, and drama lovers.
