Environment team catching up and planning for the future

During Thursday lunch the environment group had their first meeting of Term 2. At this meeting, they discussed what activities group members had participated in over the holidays, as well as discussing future plans for the following term.

One of the members, Niamh Walsh, was selected to be a 2018 YELF (Youth Enviroleaders’ Forum) Delegate. YELF is a fully funded leadership programme that allows students to learn more about the environment and issues we face in our world as a result of climate change – in particular, focussing on greenhouse gas emissions, climate change, ocean acidification, liveable cities, adaptation, and resilience. There were over 300 people who applied to be a YELF delegate, with only 55 secondary school students being selected.

Niamh describes how she felt being selected for this experience, “Being selected to take part in YELF was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down, it was such an honour and an amazing experience to be surrounded by so many like-minded and passionate leaders wanting to learn more about the issue of climate change.”

At the meeting, Katrina Chan spoke of how she has applied to the Pacific Project. The Pacific Project is an international event for high school students. It allows students to take part and understand New Zealand’s relationship with the Pacific. This event consists of spending a week at the UN Youth Australia National Conference and an educational tour to Vanuatu. Many students have applied to be a part of the experience. With only ten people from around New Zealand being selected we all wish Katrina the best of luck and hope that she is chosen for this amazing opportunity.

The team also talked about enviro week and the Maggi Kitchen Showdown competition.
