Harmonique and our Opera Ambassador take to the stage

As well as performing as a member of our Senior Choir, Year 12 soprano Anna Nguyen was part of Harmonique, one of our classical chamber ensembles, who recently performed at Howick’s Uxbridge Centre Classical Music Evening.

Harmonique’s other members are pianist Danica Loulie-Wijtenburg, cellist Camilla Isip, violist Abby Tay-Morrison and violinists Aliyah Suva and Cassandra Dela Cruz. They gave a gentle performance of Handel’s delicate aria ‘Lascia ch’io pianga’, receiving great applause from the audience. The girls are scheduled to represent Sancta Maria College (along with two other ensembles) at this year’s NZ Chamber Music Competition in June.

Anna, meanwhile, has been accepted by New Zealand Opera as one of their student ambassadors for this year, in which she will be invited to attend backstage at NZO dress rehearsals and get a special view of what it is like to be involved in a major production. This is the first time that any student from our school has taken on such a role and hopefully it will set a trend at Sancta Maria College with regard to us producing more classical singers.
