Inhale….. Exhale

Check the airway, clear the airway, check for breathing, 30 compressions and repeat.

On Wednesday, a lucky group of Year 12s and 13s went to MIT in Manukau for a Nursing Day Experience.

The day consisted us of rotating around in groups and stepping into the shoes of upcoming nursing students. We learnt how to do CPR and how important it is. Beads of sweat and huffing and puffing was heard from us as we tried to bring “someone” back to life again. In addition, we also got a closer look at the heart and lungs and their functions.

Some of the nurses taught us how to take a person’s blood pressure and where we can properly find our pulse. This was the most frustrating part of the day as most of us could not find our pulse and hear it through the stethoscopes. At the end, we learnt how to do this and felt relieved, thanks to the nurses.

Overall, it was a very riveting and fascinating day. We found out lungs can float on water and being nurses can be challenging but a rewarding experience, knowing that we can help others and save people’s lives.
