Kia Ora!

On Thursday 13 Year 10 students of Maori descent had the opportunity to go on a Maori course at MIT, to learn the importance of their culture and become inspired for future careers.

The course was named Kei a Tatou te Ihi or KATTI for short, and was aimed at inspiring and encouraging young Maori to participate in educational opportunities and develop a sense of pride in their culture and identity.

The day begun at the Marae. Around 10 schools from all over Auckland attended and were welcomed to the programme by leaders from MIT, AUT, ATT and Otago University. Then the students were divided into their activity groups to participate in the many different activities, which ranged from Maori weaving, law debates, Maori trivia and much more. And of course, the whanau all gathered together for a big feed at lunchtime.

It was a successful day of much laughter, fun and a place where many friendships were made. The students really enjoyed the programme as it was a real eye opener to the cultural aspect of their identity.
