Where else would you find questions about Cinderella’s fairy godmother, Dracula, and Mary Poppins, but the 2018 Kids Lit Quiz?
Known to many as the reading Olympics, Kids Lit Quiz is an annual international event for students in Years 5-8 to demonstrate their reading prowess. The competition involves regional events in each of the participating countries, with an international final held in a different location each year. This year the best teams from New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Africa, Canada, Indonesia, Nigeria, the USA and the UK will come to Auckland for the world final.
Yesterday afternoon our top 8 Sancta Maria readers in Years 7 and 8 competed in the Auckland regionals. They were accompanied by Danica Loulie-Wijtenburg and Elizabeth Leaning who had both mentored the teams, Mrs O’Rourke who had organised the teams, and all the other Year 7 and 8 students who had tried out for the teams.
Sancta Team 2, comprised of Odile de Jesus, Johann Ang, Alanna Santoso and James Karl very impressively placed 9th with 79 points, while Sancta Team 1, with team members Ella Dickens, Kayleigh Pieters, Brenda Chen and Sofia Olan placed in the top 30. It was a fantastic competition, with other 50 teams from Auckland schools answering 100 questions on children’s literature from a variety of categories, including enchantments, hair, and partnerships.
Sancta Team 2 made us all proud when they were placed first during round 3. The winner of the Auckland regionals was Belmont with 89 points, narrowly beating Kings School in a tie-breaker.
Sancta Maria College has been participating in Kids Lit Quiz for over 7 years, and we hope to continue to do so in the future. We are very proud of the teams we put forward, and hope to see new Year 7 and 8s competing next year.
