The inaugural Growing Basketball Coaches Programme took place at Unitec Institute of Technology with tremendous attendance by students from a number of Auckland’s top basketball schools.
The day’s content was a merge of Sport New Zealand’s Growing Coaches Programme and the Kiwi Hoops Programme. The target audience was students who were interested in coaching basketball and the course enabled them to learn the essentials of coaching while also providing them some key games and skills that related specifically to basketball.
While the content these students learned was outstanding, it was the overall theme and message that stood out for me. The day was centred around student leadership, building a positive culture within their respective groups or teams and discovering the importance of character and self-discipline in all aspects of their lives.
