Orchestra players join with the APO

27 of our young orchestral players joined with other Auckland schools as part of the Play in South workshop.

Sancta Maria College’s Light Orchestra and Primo Ensemble had the delight to take part in the ‘Play in South’ concert at the Vodafone Arena. We had flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, percussion, violin, cello and double bass players attend. These 27 students played as part of an ensemble of 194 student musicians.

Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, New Zealand’s full-time leading orchestra performed alongside the students. This massed orchestra played Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’ and Tchaikovsky’s ‘March Slav’. There were professional APO musicians in every section of the orchestra, ready to teach and lend a hand when needed.

Overall, it was an extraordinary musical experience and the students gained a lot of expertise from it. Having the aid of some of the finest musicians around meant that a remarkable performance was delivered by the orchestra. By the end of the day, every individual who took part bettered themselves as players of their instruments.

The players from our Primo Ensemble and Light Orchestra (with some of the Chamber Orchestra to boot), covered all age ranges from Years 7 to 13 and all ability levels. The whole experience proved to be a great challenge and enjoyable experience for all involved. Again, we would like to thank the APO for giving our school such marvellous musical opportunities.
