Powerful Powhiri Welcomes New Generation of Sancta Maria College Family

The school year has officially started, kicked off by the school’s yearly tradition of welcoming new staff and students with a powerful and warm powhiri by the Kapa Haka.

It certainly was a powerful assembly as well, with different individuals equipping us with important messages to guide us through the new year. To start, Mr Green, our Deputy Principal, reminded us of embracing our heritage, while our Principal Ms Moore’s address reminded us of the importance of our family and our friends.

Mr Charman, the representative of all the new staff members, called to mind every individual’s ability to do anything if they are brave enough to do it. Finally, the address of our Head Boy, Dominic Stolten, and our Head Girl, Martina Kleis, talked about their promise to serve as Head Prefects of 2018, serving the school as a whole and also every individual student in it. They reminded us about taking opportunities with an open hand, as it is these opportunities that make our future bright and our present enjoyable.

With these messages in mind, the students departed with a cookie in hand, with the sharing of food after a Powhiri symbolising two sides coming together as one.
