Problem solving and lateral thinking

The Year 7 and 8 classes had a morning of problem solving as they worked in small groups to design airplanes, towers and bridges.

Using skills such as leadership, planning and negotiation the students were faced with four design problems. Using just paper, plastic straws, string, blue tac, Sellotape, paper clips they had to combine their ideas to build the aerodynamic paper plane which flew the furthest, the tallest tower, a bridge able to hold a 500gm weight and a mystery item.

The solutions required sound language skills, mathematics, scientific knowledge, creativity and lateral thinking. From this morning’s activities eight students will be selected to represent the College in the EPro8 inter-school challenge at the end of September.
