SMC brings home the Zonta debating shield once again

Last night three of our Year 12 students – Danica Loulie-Wijtenburg, Meggy Laguda and Kelly Mascarenhas – participated in the annual debate held between Sancta Maria College and Botany Downs College.

This debate is facilitated by the feminist Zonta club, and has been held for 12 years. Last night’s debate had the moot of ‘gender stereotyping is still prevalent in New Zealand schools’, which our Sancta Maria College students were affirming.

The evening was very entertaining with both teams bringing up many relevant points, and educating the audience about the presence of stereotypes around gender within our school system.

The results were very close, but the SMC team pulled ahead and won the debate. The event was enjoyed by all, and we hope to next year break the current tie with Botany with six wins each.
