Year 11 Historians visit the Navy Museum and North Head

This trip enabled us to find information about how the Royal New Zealand Navy played an important role in World War 2 and how significant it is to all New Zealanders.

It was a beautiful day when the Year 11 historians visited the National Museum of the Royal New Zealand Navy and North Head Devonport.

We started our day by going to the museum where there were small replicas of the ships used in the wars, as well as artefacts that were more than 100 years old.

We began our research there by taking photos and making notes on the perspective of naval veterans to different events that occurred in the Second World War, the Battle of The River Plate and the war in the Pacific.

After lunch, as a class, we had a guided tour of North Head, which required walking up a steep hill. That left us all breathless! However, the view was amazing!

We were led into the tunnels where New Zealand’s gun positions were, and we then realized how much New Zealand had contributed to the war.
