Year 7 and 8 girls enjoy hockey tournament

The Y7&8 hockey girls set off from Sancta Maria College, ready for a big day of hockey at North Harbour Hockey grounds. This is the first Sancta Maria girls’ hockey team to win through to an Auckland inter zone competition.

Due to a downpour, start of play was delayed for half an hour as everyone waited for one turf to dry. This meant there was no time allowed for half-time, so the goalies had to run down the turf to change ends. Our goalie, Amanda Pai, a new recruit to the team, did a marvellous job on the day.

The teams each played 4 games in a round robin, then played off for places. The girls worked hard in all their games, losing narrowly a couple of times and winning their final game to be placed seventh in the competition. After every game the umpire, Justin Gumafelix, was able to compliment the team on their sportsmanship. Both coaches, Fiat Siasoco and Bernice Carlos, commended the girls on the improvement they made in each game.

Player of the day went to Alexandra Dela Cruz for consistently fine attacking play. Other team members include: S Anubhav, P Chan See, A Dawson, F Dougherty, L El-Boutty, A Gee, S Heruela, T Manu Fapale, C Sandall, P Stephens, VYoung.

Many thanks to the parents who supported the girls on the day. Congratulations to the girls for their dedication in training and determination to play hard and fair.
