In late July, Sancta Maria College had the opportunity to send two teams to participate in Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) which was hosted by the Rotary alongside 91 other teams from differing schools throughout Auckland. Every team were given a country to represent, and Sancta Maria College was chosen to represent the member states China and Georgia.
Team China included Stella Cranwell (Coach), Kathleen Shi, Johann Ang and Benedict Loulié-Wijtenburg. Team Georgia members were Harini Pushpakumar (Coach), Joshua Balisa, Jennifer Zeng and Alanna Santoso.
MUNA was a chance for the individuals involved to connect with many like-minded youth from across the city while also getting a taste of diplomacy in the form of a UN general assembly. Both teams presented speeches on behalf of their country on issues like the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Covid-19 vaccines, and the war in Yemen and used their skills to answer questions from other member states.
Being able to see each team members’ confidence, persuasion, and ability grow alongside their team was a truly rewarding experience.
Team Georgia were outstanding and were awarded ‘Runner-up best team overall.’
