Special Character week 2023

Raeana Flanagan and Aijah Simone

To celebrate our school’s charism, the Special Character and Service Prefects organised Special Character Week for Sancta Maria College which was celebrated from 22-28 May. The week consisted of different events every day to embrace the special character our school takes great pride in.

On Monday in F Block, students were invited to help paint the Caritas Social Justice Awareness Banner. In the four corners of the banner, they had headings that related to the goals that Caritas assigned to Catholic schools – this being Stop It, Move It, Live It, and Sweat It. Thank you to all who dipped their hands in paint and ‘stamped’ it onto the banner as an act of support and solidarity for those who are struggling.

Tuesday saw the Special Character Review team join our school for several days – they were officially welcomed with a Pōwhiri and performance of Sancta Maria College’s winning Waiata from Pompallier Shield. Click this link for more detail.

On Wednesday, students showcased their musical talents by playing jazz combos including “The Johnstone’s” in the c block courtyard. This was to showcase the one of many God-given talents our students have.

Thursday was focused on our Vinnies group. During lunch on ‘Vinnies Day’, the Vinnies leaders set up a free sausage sizzle for students who were hungry. There was also an opportunity for everyone to sign up for Vinnies’ projects. The purpose of this was to echo the selflessness of Saint Vincent de Paul and give thanks to our school community for their continuous support.

Finally, the week ended with our annual Feast Day Mass. The ‘Feast of the Visitation’ was wonderfully celebrated by Bishop Steve Lowe and Father Sherwin Lapaan. It was especially important because it was Bishop Steve’s first proper appearance at our school. The school reflected on our beginnings and inspirations – this being Bishop Pompallier and Mary Mother of God. Additionally, a total of 20 Altar Servers and Lectors were commissioned.

Thank you to all the students who participated in this year’s Special Character Week events as well as the teachers and students who made it all possible!
