On Wednesday 14 June 2023, many of our Hato Maria whānau gathered in BG4 for the opportunity to see what has been happening at Sancta Maria College for our Māori students and to collect some feedback. Making fried bread for all of the visitors was the first task of the afternoon to show manaakitanga to those who were able to come along. We started the hui with the karakia ‘Ko te Awe e Maria’ (Hail Mary) then each parent and teacher that attended shared a mihi poto (short introduction). The hui included presentations on Māori student achievement data, Māori student voice, the new curriculum changes involved with ‘Te Mātaiaho’, careers and scholarships, kapa haka and an awesome video put together by Mia Makoare sharing what our students had been up to for the first two terms. Whānau were then asked for feedback on what has been happening and what our next steps are to help uplift te reo me ngā tikanga Māori at our kura. We ended the evening by feasting on some delicious kai and some time for whakawhanaungatanga – building relationships. Overall, it was amazing to have the chance to gather together as a whānau.
