Writers’ Week 2024

Ruiqi Jiang

Apirana Taylor presented his poetry material to all our silenced senior students on 30 May 2024 – we enjoyed him reciting his poetry and sharing a little bit about himself and his life with us.  After the presentation Apirana gave a focused workshop to a select group of students, in the Library’s Quiet Room.  Apirana is not only a legendary Māori poet, but very moving storyteller, playwright, novelist, actor, musician, and painter. We loved having him join our school whānau for the morning.

On 10 June 2024, Author, Anne Kayes presented to our Year 7 & 8 students with a rapturous applause as they sat spellbound by her storytelling and captivated by her words of wisdom in writing the best story.  She not only read her stories to the students, but she also empowered them with her words and thought-provoking story lines.  Thank you, Anne, for your continued support for our students.
Shilo Kino, journalist and author of The Pōrangi Boy presented to our Year 8-10 students – sharing her inspiration behind the book and design cover as well as her history, where she grew up and what her inspiration was for the book.  She then continued imparting her wisdom and skills in a workshop with a small group on Year 9 students.  Thank you Shilo for sharing your work and life story.

Ruiqi shared her insight from these authors, saying, “Having the privilege of listening to authors like Shilo Kino was an enriching experience. She extended our learning by providing knowledge about specific historical events in Aotearoa; her motivations behind writing her novels significantly impacted and inspired me and many other students.”
