Chess competition connects 22 teams

Aaron Santoso

Our chess team displayed a great effort at the East Auckland Secondary Interschools chess competition. Held at Bucklands Beach Memorial Hall, our players fought valiantly against the tough competition, achieving some impressive feats.

The playing field was tough, with over 80 players in 22 different teams. With the time set at 15 minutes and 5 second increment, our players had to calmly but quickly calculate and play the optimal move. Competing in this tournament was no easy task.

Our school sent two teams, with the following players and their scores:

Team A:

Board 1: Lucky Do (3.5/6)

Board 2: Luke McEnteer (1.5/6)

Board 3: Jonathan Brzozowski (4/6)

Board 4: Alexan Oraha (1/6)

Team B:

Board 1: Kingston Smith (4/6)

Board 2: Luke Do (1/6)

Board 3: Aaron Santoso (2/6)

Board 4: Ean Siao (3/3), Rocky Liu (1.5/3)

Team A placed 13th overall, and Team B placed 10th, both earning 6 team points.

Kingston Smith and Jonathan Brzozowski, both impressively placed 5th overall in individual standings for boards 1 and 3, respectively, winning 4 out of 6 games. Ean Siao, earned the outstanding result of winning all his games.

A big thanks to Mr Schollum, for organising the event and overseeing our students on the day. Our players thoroughly enjoyed the experience, with lots of fun, learning and friendly competition.
