In a thrilling display of creativity and technical prowess, senior students from Sancta Maria College’s math and physics departments participated in the University of Auckland’s Engineering Science Competition.
The competition took place on Saturday 10 August, where the participants were faced with the question:
“How many airships would be required to replace the Cook Strait Ferries?”
As usual, the question is open-ended. The teams worked hard to set out their own calculations and formulate their own scientific report. They were judged on their interpretation of the question and how appropriate/practical their assumptions were.
With no specialist knowledge required to understand the question, participants had to use a range of problem-solving skills that allowed them to deduce results and draw conclusions. Teams had varying answers with one team calculating the CO2 emissions and economic impacts of commercial and passenger ferries – deciding which prototype and functioning airships would be suited to substitute their current work.
The competition was a grueling 8-hours long (10:00am – 6:00pm) with brain power soaring to new heights.
We congratulate these students for participating in this amazing opportunity and using their skills in:
- Mathematics/Physics
- Logical thinking
- Computer skills
- Writing skills
- Ability to work in a team
We also thank Mr. Mack and Mrs. O’Carroll for organising this event and giving these students an unforgettable experience.
