Sancta Maria College’s annual Athletics Day was a spectacular display of talent, determination, and school spirit. Held on Friday 21 February 2025, the event brought together students, teachers, and families for a day filled with excitement and competition.
The school’s sports field was transformed into a hub of energy as students participated in a wide range of track and field events. From sprints and long-distance races to high jump, shot put, and relays, every event showcased the athletic prowess of the students. Spectators cheered enthusiastically as competitors pushed their limits to achieve personal bests and secure points for their respective houses.
In addition to competitive events, the school also encouraged participation with fun activities such as sack races and tug-of-war, ensuring that every student had a chance to be involved, regardless of skill level.
Teachers and staff also took part in a special relay race, much to the delight of the students. During lunchtime, our wonderful Tuckshop ladies prepared delicious and filling meals for us, making sure we had our stomachs were happy and ready for the last most exciting event of the day!
One of the highlights of the day was the much-anticipated House Relay, where teams from each house competed for the coveted championship title. The atmosphere was electric as runners dashed towards the finish line, with teammates and supporters cheering them on from the sidelines.
Acting Principal Mr. Green commended the students for their dedication and sportsmanship, emphasising the importance of teamwork, resilience, and healthy competition. “Athletics Day is not just about winning medals but about celebrating our collective efforts, supporting one another, and having fun,” he said.
At the end of the day, Hokianga emerged as the overall champion, earning the highest points in the various events. Waitematā took out second place and Kororāreka & Akaroa third and fourth, respectively. There were also two record breakers for the day:
- Stefan Kozina: U16 Boys 200m (23.66s)
- Mya Tubu: U19 Girls 100m (13.04s) and 200m (26.32s)
Congratulations Stefan and Mya – a phenomenal effort. However, the true victory lay in the spirit of camaraderie and enthusiasm that resonated throughout the event.
As the sun set on another successful Athletics Day, students left with smiles on their faces, memories of thrilling races, and a renewed sense of school pride. Sancta Maria College continues to foster a culture of sportsmanship and inclusivity, making Athletics Day a cherished tradition for years to come.
