It was a fine day with slightly small rain clouds and a bit of drizzle on Monday 17 February 2025, reasonable warm as the sun illuminated the sky. Fine weather for Sancta Maria College’s annual Year 7&8 swimming sports day at Papakura’s Massey pool.
The moment everyone walked into the pool entrance with their togs underneath their PE uniform, the anticipation was gathering amongst the competitors.
Once everyone arrived at the pool, they were instructed to go to their house sections. Waitematā on the right, Akaroa on the left and Hokianga along with Kororāreka in the middle. Then Mrs. McKell led us in prayer and reminded us of the health and safety rules.
The stroke options for the day were Freestyle, Backstroke and Breaststroke. Every student got to pick if they wanted to do the competitive timed, 50 metre races, the 25 metre, untimed, ‘give it a go’ race, or the social events for less confident swimmers. Everyone was able to participate as there were fun activities such as the donut rings, the noodles and the kick board, which grew popular amongst everyone.
The day was almost at an end, but there was one last event, which was the house relay – it was fierce competition. Finally, everyone changed into their dry clothes and departed to their assigned buses where it took them back to school.
What an amazing day full of excitement, nervousness, and exhilaration! A day to remember. Thank you to the Sports Department who organised and managed the day for us.
