Day 4 saw two more wins for the football girls, a first win for the hockey team and a win and a loss for our netballers.
The Sancta Maria football girls have continued their winning streak with 2 more victories under their belt today!
The morning saw them face Lynfield, the team that gave them their only win of the season in the Premier Competition this year. The girls came out firing and lead 1-0 at half time with a cracker of a goal from Kristy Attenberger. The Sancta girls weren’t finished there though, with Sophie Ruka grabbing a brace, calmly slotting her first to the side of the keeper and chipping her for the second in the second half.
With a 3-0 lead, the girls were playing the football of champions and Anna Jury got her name on the score card as well with a great follow up from Laura Mattson’s corner kick. The Lynfield girls responded with their own goal late in the second half, but could not offer any more leaving the Sancta girls to play off for 17th-20th against Paeroa.
With 24 teams in the competition, the Sancta girls were determined to make sure that they left their mark by aiming to come top of the bottom eight, after missing out on top 16 in pool play. To move into the play off for 17th and 18th, a win was needed this afternoon against the L&P girls.
Sancta dominated from the start, forcing Paeroa’s defence to play deep into their own half and pressuring their keeper, who pulled off some superb saves. Sancta finally managed to break through and were up 1-0 and half time thanks to Kristy Attenberger’s goal scoring boots.
The second half saw Sancta continue to dictate play and Attenberger snuck another past their keeper to give the girls a more secure lead. Plenty of shots were made on Paeroa’s goal and Sancta kept the ball in the oppositions’ half for the majority of the second half.
When the final whistle blew there were screams of delight and bright beaming faces as the girls congratulated each other on their fantastic win. With the play off for 17th and 18th against One Tree Hill College looming, the girls will be looking to exit their tournament with a bang and hopefully a final win!
Day four of UNISS was a day with mixed results for the netballers. In the Prems’ morning game they came out with a win (36/31) against St Mary’s and were happy to have had an amazing run out on the court.
In the second game against Matamata College, the girls weren’t quite as lucky with a loss of 30/36 but enjoyed themselves nonetheless.
The hockey girls went down 0-3 on Wednesday. However, an enthusiastic effort today saw them record a 1-0 victory over Edgewater College. Well done girls!
