Tuesday was a day of learning new things, meeting new people and getting the opportunity to visit one of the best universities in the world for ten lucky Year 10 students.
An annual event called BEAMS was held at Auckland University and it was special because it gave the chance for students of Pacific and Maori descent to come together and learn more about Business, Engineering, Architecture, Medicine and Science.
The busy day began with a prayer and then a session listening to a guest speaker and how his life has changed by studying at Auckland University. We then got into groups and were mixed up with students from other schools, and it was quite surprising to hear that there were a few schools that travelled from other parts of New Zealand to get there.
We then started a rotation and each group got to interact and test their skills by doing 5 workshops. It was really intriguing to find out that architecture involves more than just building houses, but more of being creative and finding your own style.
Each workshop provided something new to the table, and many of the students found interests in each subject. As BEAMS is supposed to encourage Pacific and Maori students to consider Business, Engineering, Architecture, Medicine and Science it definitely did for me.
It was an experience that the other Year 10 students and I won’t forget and it fuelled us with ambition to work hard so that one day we could be graduates of Auckland University.
