The New Zealand heats of the 2017 Reading Olympics have begun!

Last Tuesday saw the top 20 readers of Sancta Maria College at St Cuthberts ready to compete against the other 58 teams in Auckland.

Accompanied by Mrs O’Rorke, our librarian, who made this whole event possible for us, were the team members (Kayleigh Pieters, James Karl, Ella Dickens, Novyna Tolentino, Daniel Avis, Alanna Santoso, Sabrina Romero Mittelstaedt, Sean Wang), mentors (Elizabeth Leaning, Gayle Lee, Danica Loulie-Wijtenburg, Nicholas Jansen, Bryan Crombach), and other student supporters.

Our day was themed with all things related to children’s literature, whether those be novels, authors, characters, nursery rhymes or picture books. The main event was, of course, the 100 question, 10 category quiz that we had been preparing for since last year. However we did also enjoy the various prizes won, for example by Elizabeth Leaning, and the pizza lunch beforehand.

Sancta Maria College’s two teams placed 13th and 30th overall, with team 1 facing off in a tie breaker for the highest score in a category. We were very proud of their achievements, and hope to see them do even better next year.

For now the library is quieting down, with weekly meetings in place of the previous intensive trainings.
