The South Eastern Zone Football Tournament on Tuesday saw the Year 7 boys’ football team take on a number of schools from East Auckland.
They were placed in Pool 2 and lined up against Mission Heights; St Kentigern, Bucklands Beach and Howick.
The competition was just about to be postponed at the last minute after the referees pulled out. But there was no need to worry because help was on its way, as the Year 10 under 15 football players from Sancta Maria College saved the day and ended up doing a superb job controlling the games, working tirelessly to referee 6 games each. Those students were Francisco Siasoco, Gustav Schlusaz, Kohan Paterson and Adam Martis.
It was a great opportunity for the Year 7s to go out there, enjoy themselves and just give it a go, and although they weren’t as successful as they would have liked to be, their tenacity and attitude of never giving up helped them to grab momentum and set up some great plays on the field. This led to an excellent goal by Jayden Lai that won them a game.
There was also some game-changing defence by Navhil Singh and Liam O’Rourke, who were able to stop the opposition from scoring on several occasions. In fact all of the defending players put up a tremendous effort while the mid-field and attack initially found progress difficult.
Throughout the day the passing at the front improved a lot and it was one of the many positives to take home. They ended up tied with Mission Heights on the standings by the end of pool play.
The boys led by example and were gracious in defeat, displaying the values of our College, leaving with that fighting spirit still alive in them as one team.
