Into the aspiring world of art

Art really does send you into a different world filled with creative flair and imaginative life size sculptures, one that our Year 11-13 art students got to experience last week.

At the Te Tuhi Arts Centre in Pakuranga colourful paintings, photography and abstract drawings that were the top in their schools and region lined the tables of art boards. The sparks of inspiration flew high in the air of our ambitious art students as they wandered through the art boards whilst taking photos in awe of the amazing pieces.

There were a couple of small exhibits that caught their attention the most; Maria Ezcurra’s ‘Invisible’ installation, constructed using 120 women’s stockings to conjure body silhouettes, the abstract scene invited its audience to see into the many views of the towering translucent structure.

There was an installation by John Vea that portrayed a strong message emphasising the wearisome labour intensive work that heavily impacts on many factory workers today. Taking inspiration from his own factory work experience in a potato chip factory, Vea named the installation- “you kids should only experience this for a moment-don’t be here for life like me.” And the simple yet powerfully intricate instalment, immersed you in the world of factory work and the long days spent which are often obscured to our own lives.

We also encountered other inspiring and creative works such as ‘Squat’ by Bruce Barber and ‘Diagram for a quantum event’ by Karyn Taylor.

Overall the trip to the small Pakuranga arts centre was one not to forget. Most of the students leaving still with the creative buzz. It was a wonderful place of creativity and inspiration, full of beautifully innovative student boards and dramatic masterpieces that captured the eye.
