An idea from Year 10 student Sean Hancock has taken one step further to becoming a reality. A keen explorer of the outdoors Sean has gained a range of qualifications and experience from participating in adventure activities from climbing to kayaking. He approached Mr Ryan Camp, PE teacher and Year 8 Dean, with a proposal to form a Sancta Maria College Rock Climbing and Tramping club.
Mr Camp, who holds a NZOIA Rock 1 qualification set the wheels in motion by calling a meeting of interested Year 9 and 10 students. Fifteen enthusiastic students and three staff members came along to listen to Mr Camp and Sean explain their proposal.
This term they hope to arrange indoor rock climbing at Extreme Edge Panmure so that every one becomes familiar with climbing techniques and gains the confidence to explore our beautiful country.
Being active, going on tramps, having fun together and experiencing and appreciating the wonders of our land are some of the aims of this new group. Senior students will be invited to join next year when they return from study leave and NCEA examinations.
