In this series of articles, we get an inside look at our 2020 prefects- their backgrounds, roles and ambitions. Today we are featuring our Service Prefects, Francesca Abesamis and Owen Tamayo.
Being part of College 1 Netball, Jiu Jitsu, swimming, athletics and basketball, Francesca states that her sporting hobbies have been a huge part of her life. Taking an interest in Biomedicine, and other science-related studies, Francesca has a passion for solving medical issues. She is currently taking chemistry, biology, economics, calculus and English. Francesca describes how different science and economics can be, but both can be applied in the real world. Francesca enjoys problem solving and finding out answers to any question, no matter how big or small. This year, Francesca aims to gain at least 50 Excellence credits.
Owen enjoys sports such as football and basketball. Owen also has a strong interest in becoming a doctor in the future. Because of that, this year, Owen is taking chemistry, biology, business studies, calculus and English. He is determined to get an Academic Gold (Excellence endorsement) and possibly an Academic Honours badge for level 3 and a scholarship for University. Owen is also a part of the Young Vinnies, 40-Hour Famine, Sports committee and is a Eucharistic Minister.
As Service Prefects, Francesca and Owen plan on opening more opportunities for service-related activities for students. Even though the school has a variety of groups, they want more students to join in groups such as Young Vinnies or the 40-Hour Famine.
Francesca says, “All help that is received counts, no matter how big or small it is.”
Francesca’s goals for this year are to continue to serve both the school, and others. This year, she also hopes to promote more opportunities to serve at school. She wants to motivate everyone to help our community and to build a positive relationship with the school and other communities.
Owen wants to encourage the students of Sancta Maria to show kindness to everyone they meet. He wants to make the school smile and be happy, inspiring others to spread positivity. Owen also hopes to boost the Special Character aspects of the school. He hopes to do this by promoting some of the school’s extracurricular activities.
Finally, Francesca and Owen leave some advice for aspiring Prefects. They remind you to just be yourself, because everyone brings something unique, and to do what makes you happy, because if you really want it, you will have to push yourself and put yourself in the right mindset to get what you truly want in life.
Owen says, “Continue to try and improve yourself because as they say, ‘the sky’s the limit’.”
Each says that being a prefect is not just about the position, it’s about being able to lead others, the extra opportunity to serve and have a positive impact on others. Furthermore, they emphasise that if you don’t get the Prefect role, to not feel down because there are still many other opportunities to take part in, and remember that we can all be leaders in our own ways.
Francesca and Owen are amazing leaders that inspire so many people. They both have a very promising future ahead of them! We wish them the best final year and lots of luck for university!
