Two teams of Year 9 students competed in the EPro8 challenge held at Papatoetoe High School last week. It put their problem solving, engineering, mathematics, electronics and science skills to the test and required them to think outside the box.
Rory Quiding, Kaitlin Eustaquio, Benjamin Botting and Isaac Sheng did us proud and came second place tied. They will now go on to the regional finals. Team 2 comprised Anson Ip, Denzelle Mercado, Andre Bautista and Cyprus Causer and came a creditable seventh.
First of all, we had a brief introduction on how to use the equipment provided to us. Then the clock started and we ran to our respective work stations. Each team was given a booklet that contained challenges at various levels. The team could attempt any challenge in no particular order. Points were awarded on completion of each section of the challenge, with added points for tidy work stations. The excitement took over as we completed the first challenge and secured points. By the end of it, our fingers were black and smelt like metal!
Rory Quiding was really in his element. “It was like real life LEGO!” he commented.
Thanks to Mr Williamson for his involvement as teacher in charge.
