A compelling piece of theatre

“‘Bless the Child’ was a really eye-opening experience. The actors performed with such emotion which truly impacted the audience and myself,” reflected Gail Calicdan.

Directed by Mīria George and written by Hone Kouka, this compelling and thought-provoking piece of theatre revolves around the death of a child and its ripple effects. As the play unravels, the audience took a glimpse into the different perspectives and experiences each character has.

“The play was written in a way to show the hard truths that still occur in today’s society. It reinforces the importance of Maori culture, Whanau and the value of human life,” commented Ella Flores.

Miria George and Hone Kouka believe that this story needed to be told because these issues are happening globally and these issues are happening now. They both hope that the audience walks away from the play acknowledging our shared humanity and responsibility to be there for our Whanau.

“The story of the play was so cleverly put together and the actors really brought their characters to life. It really challenged you to think about what goes on behind the scenes of different households in Aotearoa,” added Meggy Laguda.

Evidently, the senior Drama students all left “Bless the Child” with a new nugget of knowledge to take back into their own lives as well as their acting.
