Wynnum State High School serenade’s us in style

Wynnum State High School, from Brisbane, Australia visited our school on Monday 17 June 2024 to perform for us some of their polished pieces of music, at the beginning of their five-night tour in New Zealand.

They had a 50 strong contingent of musicians who really did knock the roof off our Auditorium.  Prior to their performance, our Big Band and Choir also blew us away with their talents.

Big band played:

  • Such sweet thunder – Duke Ellington/ Billy Strayhorn
  • Hiatian Fight Song – Charles Mingus
  • Mood indigo – Duke Ellington
  • Listen Here – Eddie Harris

The Choir sang:

  • Cantar by Jay Althouse
  • Ave Maria by David N. Childs
  • Found/Tonight by Lin Manuel Miranda, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul

It was a lovely afternoon of musical sharing; showing us that a massive body of water doesn’t prevent student’s talents from flowing.  While in New Zealand, they also visited Hobbiton and Rotorua to perform with the Rotorua Symphonic Band, performed for pupils at an intermediate school on Auckland’s North Shore, rehearsed a song with the West City Youth Band, performed at the West City Waitakere shopping centre, visited the Auckland Botanic Gardens, and watched a performance from the Manukau Symphony Orchestra.

Thank you, Wynnum State High School for your visit and concert and our students and staff who played and contributed to a wonderful afternoon.
