As part of Environment Week at Sancta Maria College, guest speaker Luke WiJohn talked to our students about climate change. Climate change is an important issue of our generation and if we are to make a change, we need the enthusiasm and motivation to solve the problem. Luke is one of the organisers for School Strike 4 Climate Change and has been actively involved with making a change, starting in Auckland. He has been a member of Project NZ and inspired action among Auckland students. He gave us a different perspective on climate change and really motivated us to want to make a difference.

If you missed last year’s Night Market, you won’t want to miss this one. On Thursday evening in our auditorium, from 5-7pm, Young Enterprise students from Auckland colleges will be showing, and selling, the unique products and services they have brought to market.

This evening at 7pm students throughout New Zealand and the rest of the world will be sitting at their computers, logging on, and beginning to test their language skills. Challenges in French and Japanese are the first order of the day with students able to migrate to other languages as the competition continues.

Friday’s NZ National Orienteering Secondary Schools Championship was a successful day out for our athletes. Recording 5 top 10s (including a composite relay team), two 11th places, and a 12th in Championship grade, was a very pleasing result considering we were up against 70 schools and several hundred competitors.

Saturday proved to be a challenging day for Sancta Maria’s netball teams. The results overall saw more losses than wins. However, they were all very close games. A highlight from the weekend was that of SMC C4 winning against Shelly Park C3 14-6. The team currently places first in their grade. Another team to watch out for is SMC C9, placing first in their grade as well.

On Wednesday night, excited Year 9s and 10s gathered at the Barfoot and Thompson stadium to test their mathematic skills amongst many other schools in Auckland. Three teams from Sancta Maria College participated in the annual Mathex competition which requires students to solve 20 questions within 30mins.

The week ahead (August 26-30) is an exciting and full-on week for students at Sancta Maria College. With the dedication and planning from our Enviro Team, they have organised ‘Enviro Week’. This is the time to focus on all things Environment! Many interesting events are happening during Enviro Week, including the important collection of waste (glasses, batteries, mobile phones), peanut butter and soft plastics.

And that’s a wrap for the netball season this year. The Year 7 and 8s have very much enjoyed playing netball. This season has been incredible with so many highlights in the games. Congratulations 8B on coming second in their flight and 8A, 7A and 7C for coming third in their flights. 7D came fourth in their grade and 8C and 7B came fifth in their competitions. 8C had two games today so it was a long day at the courts for them.

Our 1st XV played away on Saturday at Mt Albert Grammar on a good pitch but with a swirling breeze across the ground. It was a close encounter in the first half with our boys defending very well but it was MAGS who opened the scoring with a converted try. Our team had limited opportunities in MAGS territory but came close to scoring on a couple of occasions but it was MAGS who lead at the break 10 nil after converting a penalty late in the first half.

The Auckland Interfaith Council, with support from the Religious Diversity Centre, invited Year 12 leaders to participate in the Leadership Diversity Day 2019 at MIT Marae – Nga Kete Wananga.
