Scattered rain and gusty winds challenged the Year 7 and 8 netball players at the SEZ Netball games last week. The wind and rain was a bit of a hindrance because it made the ball wet, the courts slippery and the rain blinded us when shooting. The bus left school at 8:00 am, filled with girls and boys buzzing with excitement to play netball. This was a tremendous opportunity for us to continue to develop our skills by competing against some of the top players in our region.

On Saturday, the Midnight Quartet and Big Band performed at the Auckland Jazz and Blues Club Competition. We came back with a total of 7 awards: The Big Band, Octatonics and Midnight Quartet achieved gold awards, the Junior Jazz Orchestra and Septapollos achieved silver awards and the Melomaniacs and Beginners Jazz Combo achieved bronze awards!

Our 1st XV had another home game on Saturday against Sacred Heart College and it was a close and entertaining game. The conditions were good despite the rain during the week. Sancta Maria received the ball from kickoff and spent large parts of the 1st half in their own half due to strong defence from Sacred Heart, conceding two tries to trail 0-10 at the break.

On Friday we said farewell to the Chinese study group from SuZhou Fu Li Middle School. To celebrate their one week studying in NZ, there was a graduation ceremony during which the students were presented with certificates by our principal, Ms Moore, and gifts from their Sancta Maria College buddies.

Don’t let the grey clouds fool you, rain didn’t come crashing down on the games this weekend. 7A took Sunnyhills by storm winning by a whopping 25 points (28/3 to us). 7D also won their game. So good going for the Year 7s!

This year, Abby Tay-Morrison and I had the privilege of choreographing the dance for the Year 7/8 dance group. They performed on Wednesday and Thursday last week at Somerville Intermediate for the Howick and Pakuranga Dance Festival.

Two Year 13 students from our school, Peter Brzozowski (Lead Trumpet) and Phoebe Kong (Piano), have made the Honours Jazz Band for the 2019 KBB Festival. This is the Auckland Schools All-Stars Jazz Band. They will be performing 8:30pm at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell on Friday, August 16.

The 1st XI Premier football boys played their semi-final last Wednesday against Pukekohe. It was 1st vs 4th which indicated a tough game ahead. We had previously had two hard games against the opposition, losing 3-0 away and drawing 3-3 when we played at home, doing it the hard way by coming back from 3-0 down.
