Our Year 7 and 8 Senators Miniball team (bottom left) continued to dominate the B Grade winning the Grand Final 42-7 against Fighting Fantails Red. There were also wins for the Spartans (main photo) in A Grade as they defeated OJC Hustle 35-18 and the Panthers in C Grade who beat MHJC Celtics 39-13. Our Year 7/8 Girls the ‘Pumas’, had a big 59-6 win over MHJC Dreams in the Miniball C Grade. A convincing win also for our Under 15 Girls football team, 8-3 over Mission Heights.

For some lucky Year 12 and 13 students, a supplementary communications and confidence course was available over the last three days. This highly engaging course, which was worth 9 NCEA credits, aimed to give the students an opportunity to overcome shyness and build confidence. All three days were action packed, with the students being kept busy with practical assessments based on listening, teamwork and presentation skills.

Kate Sung claimed three top three finishes in the New Zealand National Karate Championship held in Auckland on July 14.

While most students were relaxing and catching up on lost sleep during the holidays, Enzo Ropers was away in Samoa refereeing touch rugby in the Pacific Games. He refereed in the gold medal mixed game and the Men’s bronze medal playoff.

Guiding teenagers through the various career and study options available to them in the modern world can be a challenge. They see so many choices and hear different views from peers and others – it can be hard to know how to decide what is right for them.

AIMS Games fundraising went well on Sunday outside the school auditorium. The weather was good and we had a great sales team and response from Mass-goers. We made a profit of $484.00 in 3 hours, serving both the 8:30 and 10:30 Masses.

This last weekend the North Island Schools orienteering event was held in Hawkes Bay, with approximately 30 schools and more than 300 competitors attending the gruelling 3 day event.

Although the holiday tempo is still on with lazy mornings and sleep ins, the Year 7 and 8 netball players woke up early Saturday morning to get ready for their netball game. Some teams had organized training during the holidays to hone the players skills.

Year 9 student, 13-year-old Olivia Selemaia, has won double gold in the Commonwealth and Oceania Youth Championships being held at the Pacific Games in Samoa.

On Friday, July 5, 8GNS had a delicious Obentoo Japanese lunch. We had chosen our order and Kevern Sensei brought it in for us at Friday lunch time in CU1. I ordered a chicken teriyaki bento box with two spring rolls, 1 dumpling, rice, pasta and delicious marinated chicken teriyaki.
