From US politics to Nazi Germany, Sancta Maria College’s two Year 13 history scholarship students spent Wednesday learning about the role of populism as a historical force. Zoe Chou and Danica Loulie-Wijtenburg joined with students from 28 other Auckland schools to discuss, analyse and dissect this provocative topic at the University of Auckland’s (UoA) Social Sciences Building. This fantastic event was organised by the Auckland History Teachers’ Association in conjunction with the UoA student-led History Society.

On Tuesday, some of the Year 8 students were selected to visit the AUT Millennium Centre in Rosedale. We had a range of activities such as kayaking, rock climbing, water safety and team building/track and field. Nestle provided us with a healthy lunch and a talk about the importance of having a balanced diet.

Yesterday 8BRN had their French Breakfast. The class had been divided into groups of 5 and had organised the whole breakfast themselves from food to decorations. The groups had each chosen a teacher to invite to the breakfast as a guest.

1st XI Football Boys had a great result against top of the Table Pukekohe as they drew 3-3 to keep the boys in contention for a top 4 finish. The boys showed true character as they were 3-0 down at half time and came back to draw 3-3.
2017 Sancta Maria College graduate, James Joblin, recently returned to the College to give a speech to our senior students on studying the humanities at Otago University. He spoke about the opportunities the University offers to school-leavers. In particular, the international dispersion of humanities graduates was a focus: like the Archaeology alumni in Spain and Philosophy alumni in France.

Samoa is a dream holiday destination for many, but 20 members of our Sancta Maria community are lucky enough to be spending 10 days in the beautiful country. The 2019 Sancta Maria Samoa Outreach Tour left Auckland this Wednesday morning, and will be returning on July 13. The 17 students and 3 teachers have all been busily preparing for months for this exciting opportunity.
