Orienteering – a fun Swedish sport involving running, jogging, walking, maps, controls, and so much more. Counties Manukau Orienteering, hosted sessions for the Year 7s and 8s. The Year 7s had their Orienteering experience the day before the Year 8s, who had their opportunity on Friday.

With the Year 10s finishing off their camp, the Year 9s spent their final off-timetable day reflecting on their wellbeing, studying the great playwright William Shakespeare and watching a modern movie version of a Shakespearean play.

Everyone needs a little bit of poetry in their life! 8CLE found that out for themselves when the school bell rang out, to start yet another term of school. A chorus of heavy sighs echoed throughout the classroom when our reliever announced Term 4’s English topic: Poetry!

After an education-filled day in learning about the past of our religion and how it transformed Auckland, the Year 9s had an education-filled day in learning about the past of our home, Aotearoa (New Zealand). The day combined education from three subjects, Social Studies (Cultures Meet), Science (Ecology), and R.E. (Caring for God’s creation).

On Wednesday, the Year 8s experienced World of Maths in the gym. World of Maths is a hands-on maths roadshow. It was a great opportunity for the students to see how maths can be applied in real life situations using problem solving techniques. It made us look at maths from a different perspective.

The second day of EOTC week for the Year 9s was filled with visits to the Cathedral of St Patrick and St Joseph, St Mary’s Chapel and the Pompallier Diocesan Centre. Each stop taught us a lot about our Catholic culture and history and deepened our understanding of Special Character.

On Friday, the Year 7s and 8s competed in the annual Stella Maris Shield. All the participants did so well and it was great to see the expertise and enthusiasm from the students.

Twenty four of our classical players took part in the Play In South session with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau. Our players – ranging from Years 7 to 13 and filling roles in all four sections of the orchestra (strings, percussion, woodwind and brass) – linked with the APO’s players and students from Pukekohe High School and Takapuna Intermediate to form an orchestra of well over 100 players.

Antonie Smal, Allan Ah Kau and Astyn Bidois are ready to compete at the inter zone athletics on Thursday having qualified at last week‘s zone finals. They are part of an eleven strong contingent from Sancta Maria College participating at the event.
