The Science Roadshow generated a sense of awe and wonder to junior students at Sancta Maria College, allowing us to stop in pensive thought as we learnt the complex ins and outs of how, and why, the world that surrounds us works.

Friday saw students and staff adorned in an array of pink across the College. The school community dusted off their pink tutus and fairy wings in preparation for Pink Shirt Day – a highly anticipated event which has quickly become a Sancta Maria College favourite.

The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) is a great opportunity for our Year 13 Business Studies students to show their full potential and get a glimpse of the real world. Each set of students create their own business and bring it to the market. There is $25,000 national prize money ready to be won as well as other regional awards, prizes and tertiary scholarships. On Wednesday May 15 our Year 13 Business Studies students made their presentations.

Orienteering in the junior school of Sancta Maria College remains a stronghold. Notably over the past couple of years with many students taking interest and competing at a high level. This week was no different with a group of seven students taking part in the Year 7 & 8 Auckland Interzone Orienteering Championships.

Playing the part of Sharpay Evans in the production of High School Musical Jnr is Shania Carter-Chan. Shania is the younger sister of Cameron Carter-Chan, who played one of the lead roles in the 2018 Senior Production of Grease.

With hattricks and big wins, our Year 7 football girls placed 4th after wins against Farm Cove by 5-0 and Bucklands Beach Intermediate 4-3. A draw against Howick, and losses to St Kentigern College and Somerville didn’t dampen their great day. They were able to regroup and battle on to take out 4th place overall.

The Year 9 and 10 students spent Tuesday morning listening to an incredible talk by renowned NZ author Brian Falkner. Accompanied by multiple jokes and stories of being yelled at by an old French teacher, he told us the secrets behind writing incredible novels such as The Flea Thing and Northwood.

Playing the role of Chad Danforth in our school production of High School Musical Jr is Jeremy Dreyer. Jeremy says that he has no previous experience in acting but looks forward to developing his skills in the future. He is very experienced at performing on stage as he’s a dancer and enjoys every part of it. “Performing on stage”, he says, “is something I am used to doing and I have performed in front of huge crowds.”

As part of the NCEA Level 3 Physics Course, students had the day out of school to deepen their knowledge of physics at Auckland’s most recognised theme park, Rainbows End. Accompanied by Mr McKie and Mrs Muir, students were let loose from the moment of arrival to satisfy their curiosities.

A visit to the Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) for an outside school experience focussed on nursing provided great insight to students who are interested in becoming a nurse or just in widening their options. The day included testing urine samples, performing CPR on dummies and walking through a “university student’s life”.
