On Sunday, Cyprus Causer (middle of photo) visited Rotoroa Island for a big day out as a result of SMC coming 6th in the moth plant competition. One person from every winning team got to go on this trip. Rotoroa Island is pest free. There were seven students selected from five different schools.

It was great to see the cricket eleven, composed of Year 7 to 10 students, take the field on Saturday morning, looking the part in their team gear. They came up against a very strong St Kents Year 9/10 team.

The 2019 Twilight Celebration Cultural festival was a huge and successful event which brought people together to enjoy the food and cultural performances organised by our own parents and students. Lasting the whole day, there were 5 events prepared by Ms Kevern and the inter-cultural committee – two of which were open to the public and led to large crowds.

Students were challenged to show solidarity through action and service this week, as Sancta Maria College held a Caritas Mufti Day. A specially planned day also took place for Year 9 students, where they learnt about the hardships people have to overcome to survive and that we should always be grateful for what we have.
This Friday’s ‘Twilight Celebration’ Cultural Festival will be an evening full of music, food and cultural performances, two of which will feature students from Sancta Maria Primary School – a junior and a senior Kapa Haka group with a total of about 60 students performing.

Year 7 student Bryan Shi recently attended the YONEX New Zealand U13 National Badminton Championships, held at Gillies Ave, Epsom. He managed to make it to the semi-final of both the boys’ doubles and the boys’ singles division 2. A great result in a highly competitive field.

Year 13 student, Breanna Jury, has created a blood glucose tracking and management app for diabetics. This has seen her chosen as one of twenty-six finalists competing for a Bright Sparks award.

Victoria Heald, Maddie Blincoe, Nicola Bebelman, Courtney Wertheim and Katrina Chan are members of the synchronised ice-skating team, Black Ice, who have won gold at the 2019 NZ Ice Figure Skating Championships in the Mixed Age grade, with the highest score they have had at a National Championship.
