Friday was Warm Mufti Day. We have been monitoring and recording the amount of electricity used at school. Our heaters and lights were turned off for the day to conserve power. The amount of electricity saved compared to a normal school day will be calculated.

We thought you might like to have an update on how our students are faring in the Education Perfect Language World Champs taking place this week. As from today we are 4th overall out of 339 schools in New Zealand and our students have picked up the following certificates, with more to come: 4 Emerald, 12 Gold, 9 Silver, 17 Bronze and 29 Credit certificates. This represents a lot of hard work and we are delighted with their achievements to date.

The Year 7&8 Pumas, representing our school, came out as the South-Eastern Zone (SEZ) Girls Basketball Champions. Spending nearly a whole day at Tangaroa College for this one-day tournament against tough opponents and with close games.

Activities are in full swing to celebrate Enviro week and on Thursday the Year 7 and 8s decorated their paper lunch bags with the theme ‘sustainability.’ The best paper bags from each homeroom were sent to Mrs McCreath to judge. The paper bags were bright and bold with strong messages. The Year 7 and 8s put a lot of effort into decorating them.

The Year 7 and 8 boys basketball team needed to bounce back from an earlier loss to Farm Cove Intermediate to beat the same team in the final of the South Eastern Zone competition.

There were no bins in the courtyard as on a usual school day. This was to challenge and encourage students to become more responsible for the waste they create and then take it home instead of leaving it in bins at school.

As Sancta Maria College engages in Enviro Week, Wednesday Lunchtime Mass brought forward the spiritual side of becoming better people to sustain the environment. A great attendance was welcomed at Mass which promoted a change in attitude.

Following the NIWA science fair, Alanna Santoso was awarded 2nd place in category 5 – technology for her project. It was great news after all the hard work she put in completing this project.

On the first of three ‘Bring Your Re-useable Cup Days’ there were plenty of students queuing at the School Café (CG6), for free hot chocolate and coffee. This is to challenge students to consider the number of single-use coffee cups used, that aren’t recyclable. Bring your re-useable cup and come along today or tomorrow for your free hot drink.

Last Friday our younger students played a friendly exchange with Mission Heights Junior College to prepare our teams for AIMS Games coming up in Week 8 of this term.
