Badminton players earn top results at tournament

Students from Sancta Maria College, including gold medal winner Roxanne Apalisok, had the opportunity to compete at the Auckland Badminton Championships. They played with heart and did their absolute best, receiving medals and certificates for their superb results.

Roanne Apalisok (Year 9) was exceptional in her campaign as she outscored all her opponents by 10 points or more in all of her 4 pool play matches. She went on to win her semi-final comfortably and won the grand final, earning herself a gold medal for the Junior Girls Singles competition.

Clive Luna (Year 10) earned a silver medal in the Junior Boys Singles competition and just missed out in the final match losing to a competitor who he beat 31-30 during match play. Leading up to this Clive swept through 4 round robin games, winning all of them to clinch his spot in the semi-final. Unfortunately Clive had to settle for second as he went down to the no.1 ranked Westlake College opponent during the final which was determined by the player who was the first to win 3 games.

Other competitors from our school included Oscar Ng (Year 10) who won 1 of his 3 matches, Rachel Hendricks who won 1 match and lost 4 in the Senior Girls Singles Competition and Henry Yu who lost his 3 matches in the Senior Boys Singles Competition.

It was a very tough tournament and all the students should be proud of their performances.
