Thanks to our Kaitiakitanga group who are raising awareness of the new changes to kerbside recycling which came into effect from 1 February 2024.
Here are the new recycling guidelines for domestic collection.
Items accepted in your kerbside recycling bin from 1 February 2024 are:
- Glass bottles and jars
- Paper and cardboard (Remove bubble wrap, polystyrene or plastic packaging from cardboard boxes – but tape and labels can remain)
- Plastic bottles, trays, and containers (grades 1, 2 and 5 only). Empty and rinse all recyclables and place them loose in your roadside recycling bin. Containers should be no larger than 4L (except Aotea / Great Barrier Island where containers should be no larger than 5L). Items should be larger than 50mm x 50mm.
- Tin, steel, and aluminium cans
New items excluded from 1 February 2024 are:
- Items less than 50mm (e.g. caps, small cosmetic and spice containers)
- Aerosol cans (steel and aluminium)
- Liquid paperboard (beverage cartons and juice boxes)
- Plastics 3, 4, 6 and 7
- Aluminium foil and trays
- All lids (Take lids off all bottles and containers and put them in your rubbish bin)
- Items over 4 litres
