From 3rd to 7th August, Filipino Cultural Week was celebrated for the first time at Sancta Maria College. It was a chance for all students to be exposed to Filipino Culture, and proved to be a huge success.
Popular games from the Philippines such as Patintero and Tumbang Preso were played during lunchtimes.
Tumbang Preso is a unique traditional game in the Philippines, where it is favoured by many Filipino children. The players must precisely hit a piece of can, whilst the person guarding the can inside the IT zone must try and tag another person.
Patintero is also a well-known game, where the object of the game is to block the other team’s players from passing to the other side.
On Wednesday, students wore mufti, and many wore Filipino attire that resembled the Filipino flag. Some even wore traditional Filipino clothing such as the Barong, as it is a national dress of the Philippines.
During Mass, all readings were in Tagalog for people to listen and admire the Filipino language. It was very different from other masses, but is one of the most memorable.
We would like to thank all of the staff and students who participated in making this possible, especially our Filipino Cultural Weak Leaders Justin Ang, Kristel Balatero, Gerard Domingo, Shaun Balgos and Mr. Tamayo who provided equipment and posters.
We hope that next year will be even bigger and better.
Maraming Salamat
