Congratulations to Shaylee Fonua and Ruiqi Jiang who represented Sancta Maria College in the Year 9&10 Eastern Schools Zone Speech Competition, held on Thursday night (29 August 2024) in Botany Downs Secondary School.
Both speeches were amazing and kept the audience spellbound, so much so, Ruiqi came away as the winner of the Year 10 category.
Shaylee presented a speech based on our school whakataukī : Piki atu au ki te taumata o tōku maunga, Ka kite au i te mana, i te ihi o te whenua nei nō ōku tīpuna – I climb to the summit of my mountain to see the lands of my ancestor.
Ruiqi’s speech was a blend of humour and thoughtfulness and was titled ‘Banana’ – discussing how dual identities in Aotearoa is a strength.
