Earlier this month, a team of year 11 geography students participated in the highly anticipated Matangi Whenua Geography competition. Representing Sancta Maria College, Johann Ang, Megan Bottom and myself competed alongside approximately 20 other schools.
The annual competition Matangi Whenua, hosted at Saint Cuthbert’s College, took place on Thursday, 12th of August. Consisting of 8 rounds, students took part in various geography challenges such as topography map interpretation, play-dough sculptures, solving hidden puzzles among images, classic geography (such as matching flags, capitals and country outlines) and much more. There were also unique games such as ‘Blues Clues’, where clues were read out loud and teams had to guess the country – much more challenging than we imagined!
Although we were unable to place top 3, it was an amazing experience. Our lead teacher, Mr Rimamate, says
“They were the first of many Year 11 students to come, who will lead the way to represent Sancta Maria in future competitions. I’m very proud of their effort, courage and I’m glad they had fun”
Thank you to Ms Bradley and Mr Rimamate for presenting us such an amazing opportunity. We can’t wait for next year!
