In this series of articles, we get to know our 2021 prefect team better, and learn about their goals, backgrounds and roles. Today we meet Callum McRae and Gina Berry, our Hokianga Prefects.
Gina Berry
Gina is passionate about equestrian; she has been involved with this sport since the age of 7. She also takes part in basketball and her strengths at school are English-rich subjects/languages such as Geography (level 3 merit endorsed), English, Media Studies, French and Statistics.
Gina says she became a prefect “In the hopes of improving my understanding of what being a leader is, through involvement in activities where I can learn to take on the responsibility of a prefect and give back to the college in the process.”
Her goals as a Hokianga Prefect are “to promote the house point competition through lunchtime activities, and hopefully the growth of students during these – whether it’s by encouraging communication in a game or taking initiative to clean up the school.” She believes Hokianga does have a good chance of winning the 2021 house competition
Callum McRae
Callum’s favorite subjects include Stats and PE studies. He is looking forward to PE studies camp, ball and graduation. What should SMC look forward to regarding your plans as prefects? He says, “house activists and more exiting house assemblies and meetings.”
About becoming a prefect Callum says “I wanted to give back to the school and make a positive difference for students to come after me”
Callum’s goals are to win in the house competition and making more house activities outside of athletics day.
When asked what advice would they give to those who are looking to be prefects in the future? Callum responded, “Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to become a prefect, enjoy the process.” Gina has a similar outlook, “My advice would be to make the most of this opportunity – it’s not just a title to add to your CV but a chance to gain experience in a leadership role with the support of friends and peers.”
Gina Berry and Callum McRae are both substantial leaders and through what they have done so far, we can see that they definitely deserve those spots. Let’s all wait and see, what else these two can do to bring us to victory…
