In this series of articles, we find out about our student leaders, their backgrounds, roles and ambitions. Today we feature our Special Character Deputy Head Prefects, Sean Carlos and Lavinia Shaba.
Sean and Lavinia are exemplary students taking on the role of arranging masses, enunciating prayers at assemblies, and many more activities associated with Special Character.
Now let us find out more about these remarkably cultivated leaders…
Lavinia Shaba
Lavinia is a bubbly, kindhearted person who loves to put a smile on someone’s face. She is someone who is not afraid to stand up for what is right – whether it is for a friend, for a stranger or for herself.
Lavinia’s current favourite subject is Photography, and she has immense talent in a variety of aspects such as alto saxophone, crochet, netball and much more. Lavinia became a leader because she wanted her contribution to be for the good of the community.
As for her goals as a prefect this year, Lavinia says, “As the Deputy Head Girl for Special Character, my goals for this year include getting everyone willingly involved in something to do with Special Character. Usually, students tend to consider different Special Character activities as being tedious. This year, we have certain goals which allow for students to have fun with these activities while also keeping Catholic faith as their purpose.”
To the students who are looking to be a prefect in the future, Lavinia says to “be the best version of yourself and always make the most of any opportunity that is given to you”.
Sean Carlos
Sean is a sociable, amiable, and admirable person, who is willing to be involved in the Sancta Maria College community to lead and enhance the Special Character activities that are going to be held.
When asked about himself, Sean says, “My biggest asset has always been my people skills, I’m not the kind of person who struggles to talk to people face to face. I like to read, play games, and recently, I’ve been going on drives with my friends. In terms of extra-curriculars, I am the guitarist in a jazz combo (and former guitarist of the Big Band), a member of Young Vinnies initiative, and the school seat for the Howick Youth Council.”
The Deputy Head Boy for Special Character has a few aspirations for this year. He wants to change the Special Character activities into something more exciting, as students often find it too serious.
He wishes that students bond closer to God and have a relationship with Him that is loving, but also one that is light-hearted and comforting. As a prefect team he wants to form a closer bond with the younger students, and they have already made steps to accomplish this.
In terms of advice for those who are looking to be prefects in the future, he said, “The best advice I can give to any aspiring leaders is to get stuck in! Get involved in as many things as you can manage and become known in the school.”
We wish both the incredible leaders, Lavinia and Sean, all the best and we look forward to seeing what you can bring to Sancta Maria College.
