Sancta Maria College’s environment committee is proud to announce that with the effort of many students, we have collected an amazing 3251 moth pods as of 7 April 2025. This is well over our original goal of 1000 and was made up of more than five expeditions in and around our school, after school hours.
Last year we only collected 450 so this is an incredible achievement. This was made possible by the efforts of both our awesome environmental team and the support of multiple students across the school.
We plan to submit our efforts and evidence into the MOTH PLANT COMPETITION – Pest Free Howick Ward which ends on Friday 9 May 2025 – this still gives us more time to eradicate!
There has also been a slight update in our moth pod picking schedule and seniors will now collect pods every second Friday, while juniors will count them every Monday morning, in an attempt to remove as many pods as possible.
Moth pod plants are invasive weeds that kill large amounts of native plants and bushes, as they rapidly smother and replace native vegetation, and its pods release numerous wind-dispersed seeds, leading to rapid spread and dominance of ecosystems. So please, if you spot moth pods in your area, bring them in! You’ll earn house points and contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment. Thank you again to everyone who’s helped so far, your efforts truly make a difference. Let’s keep it going next term!
