“We’re on the same boat”.
Eight Year 11 Sancta Maria College students attended the Pacific Island Leaders of Tomorrow (PILOT) programme, held at the University of Auckland (Manukau campus) on the 31 August 2023.
The programme was led by a variety of people from different tertiary providers and involved two workshops which included health and wealth; and communication skills. During the health and wealth workshop, the staff from St John’s Ambulance taught us how to administer CPR and apply lifesaving techniques. While in the communications workshop, we learnt about the five C’s – Clear, Concise, Correct, Complete and Compassion. These techniques are useful tools when thinking, making decisions, and communicating with others.
John Paul Foliaki was the guest speaker at the event (see photograph above). He is a musician and actor from the movies Red, White & Brass and Inky Pinkie Ponky. He shared with us his journey and experiences in life after finishing high school.
Here are some student’s reflections from the day:
“It was fun, and I felt excited to be surrounded by other Pacific Islanders. The vibes and energy were good. It was also interesting learning how to perform CPR.” Bella Proosten
“The guest speaker showed how we can do anything we want to do, even when we feel we’re not good enough.” Tugia Silivelio
“The workshops were very informative, and it was fun to get along with people of my cultural group.” Kalolaine Taulisi
Thank you to Mrs King for your organisation of the trip and Mr Rimamate for your support. We look forward to attending PILOT in 2024.
